Description of Dodital Trek

The Dodital Trek, tucked away in the beautiful Uttarakhand region of India, is a moderately challenging 16 km trek that tourists most like. It takes trekkers to an altitude of 3,024 meters at Dodital. Along the way, trekkers pass through lush forests, beautiful villages, and some villager’s huts. The highlight of this trek is Dodital Lake, 3,024 meters above sea level. It holds deep spiritual significance; according to Hindu mythology, the Dodital is said to be the birthplace of lord Ganesha, and there’s a lake dedicated to Maa Annapurna.

Filled with dense pine, oak and rhododendron trees, the lake provides an incredible ambiance all the way to Dodital, making it an ideal spot for trekkers, bird lovers and nature lovers. The 22 km trek from Sangamchatti is an easy to moderate trek, which becomes a little more challenging when extended to the Darwa Pass.

Dodital is a haven for birds and a perfect trek for birdwatchers. Dodital is the home of bird species like the Himalayan Monal, Himalayan Griffon, Bush Robin, Bearded Vulture, Grey Shrike and Whistling Thrush. The Dodital trek is an unforgettable experience for trekkers and birdwatchers.

Passing through dense oak, pine, and rhododendron forests, you will encounter various wildlife, including Himalayan red Fox, Yellow Throated Marten and Musk, Barking, Swamp Deer etc. The trek starts from Agoda Village and passes through beautiful villages like Bebra and Majhi along the peaceful Assi Ganga river.

If you wish to witness even more amazing views of the Himalayas, you can continue your trek to the Darwa Pass or Top. It is a beautiful meadow spot to visit all months, with vegetation in the summer and monsoon seasons and snow in the winter. Getting to Uttarkashi (Nearest town).

Before reaching our base camp, Agoda, your drive passes through Mussoorie, Suwakholi, Chinyali sour, Matli and Uttarkashi, offering scenic views of the Himalayan foothills.

Trekking Difficulty and Preparation for Dodital Trek.

The Dodital Trek is not overly difficult; it’s still considered a moderate-level trek, so being physically prepared is important. The altitude gain is gradual, but trekkers should be prepared for a few steep sections. Some preparation tips:

  • Physical Fitness: In the weeks before the trek, engage in cardio and strength-building exercises, such as jogging 4 km a day or walking 7- 8 km a day.
  • Acclimatization: Before starting the trek, the group spends a day adjusting their bodies at Agoda’s base camp.

  • Local Guides: It’s always a good idea to trek with a local guide or as part of an organized trekking group, especially if you’re unfamiliar with the terrain.

The Total Trek Distance is 16 km (one way) from Agoda to Dodital Lake, and Darwa Pass from Dodital is 5km, Making the total distance about 21 km.

Rest Points and Lunch Stops of Dodital Trek.

To ensure a comfortable trekking experience, we have planned strategic rest points along the route and well-timed lunch breaks to recharge.

Day 1: From Agoda to Manjhi.

  • Rest Point 1: At Bebra, we take a rest for 10-20 minutes.
  • Rest Point 2: At Dharkot, take a 20-30-minute break to relax.
  • Lunch Point: Kachoru is a 30-40 minutes of lunch stop before the final stretch to Manjhi.
  • Camping at Manjhi: A beautiful campsite with huts that are covered by pine and dark oak trees.

Day 2: From Manjhi to Dodital.

  • No designated rest points: The trail is gradual and manageable.
  • Lunch Point: Dodital or 1 km before Bhairav Devta Mandir, depending on trek pace.
  • Camp at Dodital: A peaceful, holy camping place with the lake and Ganesha temple.

Day 3: From Dodital to Darwa Pass summit and Return to Dodital Campsite.

  • Lunch Point: Darwa Pass (Summit) – A well-deserved break with panoramic views of the Bandarpunch, Black Peak, Bhagirathi Peak 1,2 & 3 and Swargarohini Peak.
  • Additional Short Rest Stops: We may take quick breaks at unnamed rest points along the climb And return to Dodital for overnight camping.

Day 4: Dodital to Agoda.

  • A long descent (22 km) back to Agoda, retracing our steps.
  • Lunch at a suitable point along the way, depending on trek speed.

Tour Plan

The 200 km drive begins from Dehradun and ends at Agoda village, the trek's base camp. In the morning, we pick up trekkers from Prince Chowk Dehradun and head towards Uttarkashi via Mussoorie, Suwakholi.

  • Duration: 2,800m (9,186 ft)
  • Lunch Point: Kachoru
  • Rest points: Bebrah (10-15 mins), Dharkot (20-30 mins)

The trek officially begins as we depart Agoda village and gradually treks towards Manjhi, a Beautiful high-altitude meadow.

After short rest stops at Bebrah and Dharkot, we halt for lunch at Kachoru, where trekkers can relax and enjoy a meal before continuing the trek. Around 4-5 p.m., we reach our campsite, Manjhi, where we camp overnight.

  • Duration: 4-5 hours
  • Lunch point: Dodital or before Bhairav Devta Temple (1.5km before Dodital)

On the Dodital trek of Day 3, we will reach our destination at the birthplace of Lord Ganesha. The trail is relatively easy, with gradual ascents through alpine forests. Since the route is less steep, we do not require multiple rest stops.

Darwa Pass is quite a challenging yet rewarding day of the trek. We start early at 8 o'clock to summit Darwa Pass, which offers a panoramic view of the Himalayas, including Bandarpoonch, Swargarohini, Gangotri peaks etc.
